Local Government Commission (LGC)

The Local Government Commission is a nonprofit organization that focuses on innovation in local environmental sustainability, economic growth and social equity. The LGC aids local governments and communities with practical assistance and a comprehensive network of local officials and community leaders. For example, the LGC runs the Center for Livable Communities, which is a sustainability center that hosts workshops and training sessions for local agencies and organizations in skills such as community image surveys. The LGC has been active since 1980, and developed the Ahwahnee Principles for Resource Efficient Communities in 1991. This comprehensive set of principles act as guidelines for sustainable planning and resource use for small communities and local governments. Other LGC activities include participatory planning and design work, policy development assistance, networking events and annual conferences.
