The State of California has been supporting regional climate change research for more than a decade. These studies have complemented research at the national level and have been designed to inform climate policy deliberations and actions in California. This Research Catalog provides basic information about past and ongoing climate change related studies that state agencies have conducted or commissioned since the early 2000s. The purpose of this catalog is to document California’s research efforts and to facilitate the exchange of information.

  1. Compost Safety Research

    For many years, rendering has served as an effective and dependable method for animal mortality disposal. For various reasons, rendering capacity in the State has significantly declined. To address the issue, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and CalRecycle recognize the need to evaluate alternative disposal options. One of those options is composting. Both CDFA and CalRecycle have taken the appropriate steps within their authorities to provide for the opportunity for pilot research projects to assess the safety of composting.

  2. Cool Communities

    This project will help support California policy makers in developing effective implementation programs for cool communities. Programs need input from all stakeholders and should be customized for each locality. The contractor and subcontractor will seek input from trade and non-profit organizations involved in planting trees, installing cool roofs, and installing pavements. They will also coordinate with policy makers to approach various state and local agencies to seek development of implementation standards and codes. Contractor will conduct technical workshops to provide input to various policy options.

  4. Deforestation in California: A poorly understood GHG emission source and emission reduction opportunity

    Deforestation events occurring daily around California are poorly accounted under current greenhouse gas emission monitoring systems and there is no standard methodology for tracking these emissions. The significance of small-scale development as a source of greenhouse gases is therefore currently unknown. This report summarized the research conducted over three years to improve estimates of greenhouse gas emissions from small-scale development in California. The research included a spatial analysis, development of emission factors and an estimate of emissions from developments across four study areas, and an analysis of the economic impacts of deforestation for development. The report provided an overview of existing policy and recommendations for additional policy action that could address emissions from development. Recommendations were focused on four potential policy options: promoting appropriate locations for development, including infill and urban growth boundaries; reducing tree removal through cluster developments; incentive programs; and revising the timberland conversion process. Additionally, the report analyzed the potential for developing a carbon offset project methodology for reduced emissions from conversion for development.

  5. Development of A New Methodology to Characterize Truck Body Types Along California Freeways

    The main objective of this study is to develop a truck body classification model using inductive loop signature data. The second objective is to deploy a pilot program to collect inductive loop detector signature data at two WIM stations using advanced detector cards. The third objective is to evaluate the performance of the developed model by deploying these advanced detector cards at an additional eight to ten stations.

  6. Development of a Portable In-Use Reference PM Measurement System

    The objective of this research project is to develop and evaluate a new gravimetrically based system designed specifically to meet Code of Federal Regulation sampling guidelines during in-use operations of heavy duty diesel engines operating in on-highway, marine, and non-road applications.

  7. Effectiveness of Sound Wall-Vegetation Combination Barriers as Near-Roadway Pollutant Mitigation Strategies

    The overall objective of this study is to provide state and local planners with information on potential mitigation options for near-roadway air pollution. More specifically, the investigators will evaluate the impacts of sound wall/vegetation combinations on downwind levels of traffic-related pollution including PM2.5, ultrafine particles, black carbon, and oxides of nitrogen. A comprehensive database, as well as look up tables and other decision support, will be developed using the collected data and summarized using a semi-empirical dispersion model.
